Bio

Rob graduated from the University of Bath in 2019 with an MChem Hons in Chemistry, which included a year in industry where he worked as a Future Mobility Intern for Shell Global Solutions. It was during this year in industry that he developed a deep interest in energy storage technologies for automotive applications, especially battery materials for electric vehicles. For his Masters project, which was supervised by Prof. Saiful Islam, he carried out a computational modelling study to investigate the atomic scale properties of a novel battery material. As an AAPS PhD student, he intends to carry out research in the area of structural battery technologies.

Name Description Date
AAPS ITT1

AAPS ITT1 took place in collaboration with external partners from AVL in the centre of Bath. Academics, students and industry representatives work collaboratively in groups throughout the week to describe and formulate real-life industrial problems into research proposals. During the ITT Students gained research distillation, presentation and group working skills.

Stanford Composites Design Workshop XXI

Attended the online Composites Design Workshop XXI, a certified live training course at Stanford University by Steve Tsai and associates. This workshop covers a wide range of advancements in the field of composite research, including a new invariant-based approach for the design and testing of composite materials. As part of the course, we were introduced to Tsai’s modulus and double-double laminates, and a range of new tools specific to this approach to composite layup. This workshop was extremely useful for both introducing us to carbon fibre composites and for getting us up to speed with some cutting-edge developments.

Modelling and Simulation of Electric Vehicle Powertrain in SaberRD - Summer Masterclass

AAPS CDT Students attended a series of summer masterclasses on the theme Thermal Modelling Techniques, this session gave an overview of three different modelling domains within SaberRD: Electrical, Mechanical and Thermal. Students constructed a basic model for each of the three domains and simulated various typical scenarios, allowing them to solidify our knowledge whilst gaining experience working in SaberRD.

Peer Mentor Training - Cohort 1

Each student is assigned a peer mentor when they join the programme, and then subsequently become a peer mentor to the following intake of students. Peer mentoring training is delivered by the Student Union to provide students with key insights on how to be a good mentor such as being a good active listener and a set of psychological models that can be used to encourage reflective discussions.
